The Art of Bedchambers, or the Art of the Pure Maiden (Fang Zhong Zhi Shu) is one of the ancient Taoist practices. The knowledge of it comes from the legendary Yellow Emperor Huang-Di, who attained union with harmony and naturalness.

The immortal Han Xiang Zi represents the essence of naturalness and harmony in the Taoist pantheon.

Until period of time when people lived according to the laws of Heaven and Earth and considered themselves to be the middle one, this practice was an integral part of life. However, over time, the theme of the Art of Bedchambers started to acquire a more and more speculative character. Consequently, today, without understanding the fundamental principles of this practice, it cannot be correctly learned.

The name of the practice originally comes from the experience of achieving complete independence from the depletion of energy and the ability to transform it into the energy associated with the highest purity. This type of energy has an allegorical name as the energy of the Pure Maiden. It was believed that the ability to interact with higher energies is the highest process of copulation.

According to the Taoist concept, a person’s vitality is determined by his ability to assimilate the qi energy produced by the body and the vital force of the jing energy. The assimilation of these energies is defined as “interacting with nine wives.”

The largest amount of jing natural energy is produced by active glands associated with the reproductive system. Consequently, the question is not only to preserve it, but also to create the necessary conditions for assimilation and transformation. This requires proper understanding because the incorrect distribution of this energy leads to its loss and blockage of energy channels. Thus, the development and control of the jing energy became the basis for the formation of knowledge that became known as the Art of Bedchambers.

For today’s generation, the Art of Bedchambers is a very difficult topic to understand. And this is for a couple of reasons. The first  cause is particular brain cortex functioning when we became dependent on reaction to sexual arousal and have accumulated certain dependence on this topic. And the second is that today the theme of the Art of Bedchambers is speculative and cannot be not only recognized, but also properly perceived without understanding the fundamental principles. Those who want to understand it seriously must realize the main thing: first, it is essential to eliminate the deviations that have created behavioral patterns concerning sexual activity.
Developing Velvet Body Developing Velvet Body
A Velvet Body is a fundamental condition for obtaining Yellow and White essences (xuan huang) in the Art of Bedchambers. This is a concept representing elements of Heaven and Earth in our body in the form of a certain substance, similar to the cinnabar.
The Velvet Body describes quality of the body in which a Yellow Flower (xuanhuang hua) is created. Yellow Flower is the essence, known in the alchemical treatise as the result of the fusion of lead (essence obtained from the circulation of energy, according to the masculine principle) and mercury (essence obtained from the circulation of energy according to the feminine principle).
The vitality of a person is determined by his ability to assimilate the qi energy produced by the body. And the vital power is determined by the ability to assimilate the jing energy. This assimilation is possible provided that the energy circulates in the body where some transformation took place. The changed body is then the Velvet body.

The Amber body is the condition for the transition to the phase of the unified body. In the Velvet body, the energy is still in a changeable form, although it unites the Velvet body, but “the juice is still flowing out.” To eliminate the “leakage of juice from a cracked bowl” (quepen zhi), an Amber body is created. The Amber body rests on the nature of the personal spirit and seals the outflow of semen (wu lou jing). Energy is in constant merging with the spirit. Naturally generated energy, jing, is absorbed by the body. The body itself becomes like amber or amber clay, the organs generate the jing energy, the processes become denser and the whole body is amalgamated.

Creation of the Mercury body symbolizes the beginning of the alchemical process. Here the law of three divisions is realized, that is, receiving jing energy from qi energy, assimilating the original jing, understanding intercourse in rhythm, copulating with the energy of the original shen.
This is the most alchemical stage in the Art of Bedchambers, since under these conditions a tripod, a crucible, was obtained. The body begins to transform energy, which creates the condition for the formation of cinnabar and, as a result, mercury.
Mercury body is a body that must be attained, it cannot simply exist, as in the case of a Velvet or Amber body. It is conceived, that is, a body changed in relation to the original, where rhythm is already important in intercourse. The Mercury body is essential for the fusion of lead with mercury.
